North Island Royals player Saflin awarded Dave Wallace scholarship

Every year, the B.C. Premier Baseball League's North Island Royals hand out the Dave Wallace Memorial Scholarship.  This year, the successful recipient of the award, which carries a $1,000 value, is Nicholas Saflin.  The scholarship, according to Royals general manager Mike Parlow, is granted based on the candidate's baseball ability, academic assessment, financial need and participation in the North Island Royals program.

Saflin, Parlow said, is a very deserving winner. Saflin will be play collegiate ball this coming school year at Williston State in North Dakota  In the 23 years that Dave Wallace coached the Royals, he demanded his players play with enthusiasm, grit and determination.  He was a competitor and hated to lose.  At the same time, he always put the long-term development of the players ahead of short-term victories.  He encouraged his players to put their best effort into everything they did on the field, at school and at life. He believed you don’t take shortcuts because it always shows up in the results.

David Wallace Memorial Scholarship applications are reviewed by the Wallace family and the North Island Royals Baseball Club.
